Our Location -- Clayoquot Sound
Mountains of green forest sweep down to the sea in this vast region of islands, rainforest valleys and salmon-rich streams. On remote sand dune beaches the tracks of countless shorebirds lie beside the solitary prints of the rarely seen wolf and cougar. In the pristine ancient forests the stillness is underscored by the melodious song of varied thrush, the tapping of woodpeckers, the insistent caw of raven and the hunting call of soaring eagles. The varying weather carried by ocean swell and diurnal tides create the dynamic energy that makes this region so uniquely fascinating. A natural mineral hot spring, the only one on Vancouver Island, is a favored destination that makes one feel healthy and invigorated .
On the outer west coast of Vancouver Island, straddling the 49th parallel, Clayoquot Sound consists of over 260,000 hectares of islands, fjord inlets, mountains and beaches. Adjoining the north end of the Pacific Rim National Park with six vast pristine wilderness areas, this region has been recognized as the largest intact rainforest in southern British Columbia. This has caused the provincial government to protect a significant portion of the Sound and, with local support, to recommend the region for UN Biosphere Reserve status. We hope this protection will extend to all intact areas. Clayoquot Sound has been home to the Nuu-chah-nulth for thousands of years and they have been a significant force in the efforts to bring profound changes in the management and protection of this region.
